Comprehensive Guide to Playing Monster Hunter XX On the 3DS

Here I will lay out a comprehensive guide to getting started playing Monster Hunter XX on the Nintendo 3DS, complete with relevant links. None of the links in this post contain any copyrighted or otherwise illicit material. This guide will assume that your 3DS console already has custom firmware installed and that you have access to a computer with 7zip, or other file archival software.
-----PART 1: INSTALLING UPDATE 1.4 AND FAN TRANSLATIONS-----
The unaltered 1.4 update file is actually a bit difficult to find. You have to do some digging to get your hands on it. Most 1.4 update cias you can find will already have one of the the english fan translations applied to it. "English Patch V5" refers to the UI-only translation, while "Generations Ultimate Patch" refers to the newer full translation.
If you do not download a cia file that already has the english patch you want applied, the respective links above will lay out how to install one of the patches yourself. There are two different versions of the patch to choose from; each one has separate installation procedures. The full translation will have you patching an Update 1.4 cia anyway, but the UI-only translation can be applied through Luma's game patching feature.
-----PART 2: TRANSFERRING YOUR SAVE FROM MONSTER HUNTER GENERATIONS-----
Once your extdata is backed up, launch MHG and delete all of your event armors and weapons, including any palico event armor and weapons. Many pieces of event gear will cause crashing in MHXX. Once your event gear is gone, enter SaveDataFiler, navigate to the SD tab, then import the ext 00001554. This will install MHX extdata onto your system.
Next launch MHX Data Manager onto your 3DS. This is a barebones application that is very easy to navigate. It will be used to import your character into the MHX extdata we just installed, so that they can then be imported into MHXX. Simply select the "copy character" menu option, and select your corresponding original region and save slot. Then select Monster Hunter X (JPN) and a save slot to paste your character into.
Once you are done with MHX Data Manager, launch MHXX and find the option to import your character from MHX.
-----PART 3: PLAYING ON INTERNATIONAL SERVERS-----
The first link for this section contains several cheat codes for use with Luma. The one at the very top is the only one we want to worry about for now. Copy the code into a "cheats.txt" and place it in /luma/titles/0004000000197100 on your SD card. Now, while you are in MHXX you can press L+Down+Select (or whatever combo opens your Luma menu), where you can activate the crossplay cheat. This code is highly unstable on the newest version of luma, and will crash. You can install an outdated version of Luma, specifically 9.1, which is much more stable with the cheat code method. Alternatively you can follow the second link and install a plugin that works with up-to-date versions of Luma.
To install the plugin, follow the second link. Copy the boot.firm onto the root of your SD card, and copy the plugin.3gx into Luma/Plugins. Enable plugin loader in the luma menu. You can now press select while in MHXX to bring up the plugin menu, where you can enable crossplay along with several other options.
Whether you play with the plugin, or play with the cheat code on luma 9.1, there is one unavoidable crash. If you join someone's hub and they post an event quest, your console will crash. This crash is harmless and more a nuisance than anything else, just try to avoid event quests.
