Presenting the MHOS Portable DNS Server!

Post by Grender »

Hello everyone!

As some of you may know, certain Internet Service Providers (ISPs) tend to block DNS requests to custom servers. When this happens, the dreaded -611 error often appears. Up until now, most people have relied on VPNs to bypass this issue. However, today I’m introducing a new solution!

I’ve developed a simple application that functions as a Portable MH Oldschool DNS Server. With this tool, you can run a DNS server locally on your machine.

Using it is simple; instead of setting our usual 34.75.107.68 IP address as the DNS server in your network settings, you’ll use your own local DNS IP address (It will be displayed directly in the app). This ensures that your DNS requests are no longer intercepted or tampered with by your ISP, eliminating the need for a VPN.

This solution is especially useful for players using real hardware who are unable to run a VPN at all. Enjoy!

I actually tried this just now after posting a help thread in MH1.

Still failing with -611.

Still failing with -611.
That's not possible UNLESS your router is literally blocking requests to port 53 too, which is unlikely. Make sure you are specifying your local IP address when configuring the DNS server, not our IP.

Thats what I thought as well. (didn't know the port # though)
I definitely have to figure it out. I actually got things to work by using an old Windows7 computer with an ethernet port. I hooked the PS2 to the Win7cpu and instead of sharing the connection I bridged the WIFI and Ethernet connections. I then manually put in the IP of the bridged connection. For DNS I tried just using the MHOS 34.75.107.68 but it failed DNAS again.
So it tried to download and install the MHOS DNS server sftwr on the Win7pc but it wouldn't run. So for laughs I decided to stat the MHOS DNS on my original computer and use that IP as the DNS.
It works!! I got into all 3 games MH1 MHg and MH2. Now I got to figure out why it works so I can take the Win7pc out of the line cause I'd rather not have that hooked to the internet.
