Help! Can't Connect

Post by Hellbender »

@Grender I've actually tried your MHOS Portable DNS Server still getting same as below. Tried both auto IP and Manual IP

Ok, so my PS2 has the network adapter. I am trying to use my laptops WIFI connection. I have a USB ethernet port attached to the computer and an ethernet cable leading from that to my PS2. I have my WIFI connection shared.
In MH1 I went to town setup the connection pull IP automatically and changed the DNS. It seemed to work and let me setup a new user but after choosing and entering a user name and password it seemed to time out after clicking the new user button.
Trying to reconnect the connection would get to 36% and retry a couple time before timing out.
Tried same in MH2 which also went to 36% but after failing a couple times said it couldn't assign an IP Address. SO after that I went to computer and pulled up the IP address of the USB Ethernet connector. I then edited the connection information from pulling an IP automatically to manually typing in the IP, subnet, and Router.
Went back to MH1 and it zoomed right through and then......It got to DNAS went to 40% paused for a long time jumped to 50% turned red and failed.
On MH2 does same thing but again provides a little more info by giving "DNAS" Error: -611 Response error from DNS server. Please check network configuration.
I have no ideas at this point. Any help would be appreciated!
TIA,
Billy

Possible solutions for DNAS Error -611:
  • Replacing the CMOS/Clock battery on the PS2 with a functional one and making sure your time is up to date in the PS2 system settings.
  • Checking your firewall or router settings and/or contacting your ISP.
  • You can use a VPN to hide the DNS requests from your router and/or ISP. Make sure the VPN doesn't also block DNS requests.
It could be your PS2 clock battery that's dead.

Thank Adam for the reply!!
My battery definitely is dead but the systems time and date are set correctly. (does the battery itself matter?)
I've installed the MH OldSchool DNS Server with no change.
I'd check firewall settings but don't really know what to look for.
I use Fios and they control the router. What would I even ask the ISP to do?
As for a VPN any recommendations? I'm trying to hide DNS requests but not block them?
Sorry not very fluent in all this stuff. I really just wanna play!

The battery does matter a few users haven't been able to connect online due to a dead PS2 clock battery, replacing it fixed their issue.

Thanks for the info and the help!! Guess I'll be tearing apart my PS2! It's a lot of work to replace a damn battery! LOL

When using the mhosdns tool you are inputting the DNS address it tells you, in the netfile config right?

For example I would enter 192.168.2.32

First of all I really appreciate you taking the time to try and help me!!

Before I saw your reply I started trying another way to get this to work. I took an old Win7 PC that has an ethernet port and hooked the PS2 to it. Then I bridged the ethernet port connection to the WIFI connection instead of sharing.
I edited my network file and assigned the IP of that bridged connection and manually set the DNS to 34.75.107.68 I got the same problem. So I then downloaded that MHOS to the Win7 PC and it wouldn't run (Told me files weren't present or something) So then just for fun I went to my original laptop and started the MHOS Server. I put that IP as the DNS in my network file and left the IP set to the Win7 pc. (Confused yet?)
Anyway it somehow went through and I am actually in Town!
It's not optimal but seems to work so I guess I'll just play and see. :)
