i have 2 questions:
do you need to do any modding to play on original hardware or just a native Japanese console and copy of the game?
and can people playing on original hardware join friends playing via emulator?

Emulator and Hardware players can play together with no modding required for Japanese consoles.
Modding is not necessary to play online a JP PS2 with a JP copy of the game can connect to the servers.
If you plan to play MH2 it does have some issues playing online when playing off a disc copy of the game.

so i was reading the guide and was wondering about a few things~ also im planning on buying a ps2 for this instead of using an emulator program.

-memory card
-hardware to connect to internet

-for the memory card, is it in the ps2 already or do i have to buy an external one?~

and now that im looking/writing it over they're basically the same question

-for the hardware, is it in the ps2 already or do i need to buy an external one?~

if you are replying to this PLEASE send me an email at gamer152@email.com instead as i would see it faster than in here~~ ty so much in advance <3

Memory Cards are sold separately. As for the hardware needed if you use a Slim PS2 you don't need anything else; if you use a Fat PS2 (recommended due to being able to run games through the HDD) you'll need the Ethernet adapter.

Are they still working on servers for US/EU versions? I have the EU version on PCSX2, and I’d love to play online some day.

There is no active development for those servers. There have been attempts, but that’s all. Keep in mind that we don’t have any network packets captured for those game servers, and they use a completely different protocol. Who knows what the future holds, though!
